Re: Location, Location, Location - for the Mercury Transit

Pictures of the Venus transit on June 5th, 2012. These pictures were taken at the Gretna Observatory. We had a lot of high level clouds and were only able to just catch the end of the transit right before sunset. Note the low elevation by looking at the angle of the tube assembly of the telescope. F...

Location, Location, Location - for the Mercury Transit

In a little less than 4 weeks we will have an early morning opportunity to follow the progression of the silhouette of Mercury as it glides across the face of the Sun. That day is Monday, November 11th and the transit begins shortly after sunrise. So technically those in the New Orleans area will be...

The DSSG begins 3 weeks from today

Today is October 1st - a psychologically uplifting day for me as it heralds the rapid approach of cooler weather (hopefully) and the nearness of the Deep South Star Gaze. Now in it's 37th year, most of the past DSSG's have been held in October, typically after mid-month. It all depends upon when "Ne...

My youngest daughter, Jamie and her husband, Matt, just had their first child, little Lucy Marie Glaser, bor...

Door Prizes for the 2019 Deep South Star Gaze

Ok, this is what we have so far. Note, I have not yet received door prize donations from any of the companies that I have sent request letters to. Those letters went out about 2 weeks ago so I should be receiving responses/prizes soon, so our list of prizes will grow. So, especially for our new atte...

20 inch f 4.5 Dobsonian Telescope for sale

This one is owned by Ralph Junius, one of our PAS members and a regular at the Deep South Star Gaze. He would like to sell it to downsize to another 20 inch dobsonian with a faster focal ratio (making the new one shorter). What Ralph has is a Night Sky 20 inch f/4.5 scope with Pegasus optics and Arg...

Re: DSSG XXXVII (37) is 6 weeks away

Looks like I will be at the September meeting unless we get the call that our youngest daughter has gone into labor and if so, we are off to Dallas. I will have a few DSSG registration forms for those that may need one. (Please print your own if you can.) Ok, now we are under 6 weeks away from the b...
