Black Hole Pictures

Post by Bjohnson » Wed Apr 10, 2019 12:21 pm

Black Hole pictures for the first time ever.
Pictures were taken in April 2017, but they are now releasing the pictures and details.
Funny- looks like a few of the pics I've taken when I forgot to focus very well. Guess that's what a Black Hole can do to ya.

for the technical minded members, here is the Astrophysical Journal writeup:

Interesting reading on how it was done and the coordination involved to produce it. Some quotes from the two stories:

"We have seen what we thought was unseeable," said Sheperd Doeleman, director of the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration. "We have seen and taken a picture of a black hole."

"In short, this work signals the development of a new field of research in astronomy and physics as we zero in on precision images of black holes on horizon scales. The prospects for sharpening our focus even further are excellent."

It will be interesting to follow and see what else comes out of this research.
What do y'all think? Comments?
