South Pole marker

Post by Lmccormick » Tue Oct 13, 2020 2:56 pm

My uncle was a Seabee and part of Operation Deep Freeze in 1956/57. The Seabees built the facilities for the scientists that came there for the IGY in 1958. He overwintered at the South Pole and helped survey the geographic South Pole. My uncle Pat got to know James Taylor's father, Dr. Isaac Taylor, who was also part of the mission. Every year the marker that marks the geographic South Pole is changed. My uncle sent me this to me last year because the marker for 2019 has a telescope on it.

From the page, "The design is inspired by the central role of astronomy and cosmology science at the South Pole...exemplified by the motto "From the ice to the stars...and beyond." And in case you were wondering, the telescope marker is pointed toward...the telescopes in the dark sector."
