Astronomy Day at Bogue Chitto State Park

Post by Bsimon » Sun May 02, 2021 12:16 pm

Saturday May 15th is International Astronomy Day.

The PAS will be doing it's first official "Outreach Event" at Bogue Chitto State Park (very close to the club SPMOS observing site) on that afternoon and into the evening. If the weather is good the 15th will be perfect for observing the crescent Moon which will be just a few days past new, perfect for observing some of it's features with great shadow detail. The Moon will not be a major factor at all in observing the deep sky under dark conditions. Depending upon where you set up (and we will check that out) many may get the opportunity to observe the great Omega Centauri Globular Cluster low to the south (NGC 5139).

Note, we are setting up in the riding stable area which now has good bathroom facilities. We have used this site in the past. We are not in the Convention/Meeting Room area that we have also used in the past. Once you drive in at the main entrance portal and you get to the road where you can turn either left or right, turn to the left. The riding area will be about 1/4 mile down that road and to your left. See the attached images.

Arrival after 4 pm. Bring drinks and food for dinner on your own.

Barry Simon, and as discussed with Phillip Wollenberg
